Difference - GE 9 Unit 4

A big difference
A small difference
Far (more addictive) than
Nowhere near as (high) as
Considerably (less) than
Not nearly as (exotic) as
A great deal (cheaper) than

Almost as (much) as
Nearly as (expensive) as
Slightly (bigger) than
Not quite as (enthusiastic) as

No difference

As (beautiful) as

Not any (nicer) than

No (more time-consuming) than.

Tips:

Use comparative with: than

They are slightly bigger than the ones I have got.

Use adjective with: as … as

The normal price is nowhere near as high as that.

Can also use:

much/a lot with comparatives – big difference

a bit / a little with comparatives – small difference

Garuda is much more expensive than Lion.

= Garuda is a lot more expensive than Lion.

This one is a bit cheaper than all the others.

This one is a little cheaper than all the others.

Can use just with as … as to add emphasis.

They are just as beautiful as mine.

Can also use: more, less, and fewer with nouns.

There are far more people than I expected.

Use less with uncountable nouns.

Use fewer with countable nouns.

I have less free time than I used to have.

I have fewer days off than I used to have.

We can say:

I am not nearly as rich as he is.

I am not nearly as rich as him.

OTHER WAYS OF COMPARING

To compare two things

Twice/three/four times + as … as

This shirt was only about twice as expensive as my jeans.

= My jeans were half the price of the shirt.

To describe something that continuously changes

For long adjectives
For short adjectives
get + more (and more) + adjective

The tickets are getting more and more expensive.
=  The price are increasingly all the time.
get + comparative + and + comparative

This survival rate was getting better and better.

To say one thing depends on the other

The+comparative/more …, the+comparative/more

The bigger your house,  the more it costs.

The more I learned about grammar, the more interested I became.

= Every time I leaned grammar, I became more interested in them.

The sooner, the better = as soon as possible

When do you want that report?

The sooner, the better.
