Wish - Hope - Third Conditional




WISH

To talk about the opposite of what is true or real.



About states: wish + past simple

I wish I had a car.

I haven’t got a car now, but I want one.

I wish we weren’t so broke.



About activities happening now : wish + past continuous

I wish he was coming to this workshop with me.



About abilities or possibilities : wish + could + infinitive

I wish I could come with you.

I wish I could attend the workshop.



About obligations : wish + didn’t have to + infinitive

I wish I didn’t have to go to this party.



I wish I was rich. I wish he was bigger.

I wish my eyes were normal.



Second conditional to give reasons for wishes.

I wish I had a car.

If I had one, I would not spend my life waiting for a public transportation.




WISH & HOPE

I wish you were coming to this party.

( I know that you aren’t coming = imaginary situation)

I hope you are coming to this party.

( I think you might come = real possibility)

He wishes he lived somewhere.





I wish we could stay at home instead.

I wish I didn’t have to work so hard all the time.

I wish I were a professional footballer.

I wish we had a new washing machine too.

I wish we did something more exciting.
