Habits, Repeated Actions, and States (HRS)

A. PRESENT HRS

1. Use Present Simple: present habits, repeated actions, and states.

- I think I am pretty healthy and

- I just eat what I like.

2. Often use Present Continuous: present habits and repeated actions that annoy us or happen more than usual.

- My mom is always complaining about my diet.

3. Use Will + Infinitive: repeated and typical behavior in the present.

Most mornings I will have toast with a lot of peanut butter and jam.

Notes:

Sometimes I will eat junk food (repeated and typical behavior).

Tonight I will probably have a pizza ( a future action).

To show criticism:

He will leave the door open all the time.

B. PAST HRS

1. Use Past Simple and used to + Infinitive: past habits, repeated actions, and states.

- I hardly ever did any exercise.

- I used to see him out running every morning.

2. Use would + infinitive: past habits and repeated actions.

I would get an ice cream or something on the way home from school everyday.

3. Used to

+ I didn’t use to like vegetable.

? Where did you use to live?

- He never used to help with the washing up.

For something that only happen once:

I gave up smoking in May.

4. Combination used to  and would + infinitive

- I used to sleep until 10 a.m., then

- I would get up and have breakfast in the garden.

- After that, I would get the train to work.

My grandparents didn’t use to drive, they preferred to walk.

Where did you use to live when you were at college ?

The office used to be very noisy, but it much quieter now.

When I was young , I used to be very happy.

When I was younger, I used to eat a lot of bananas.
