GE 9 Unit 1




Unit 1

My first language is Indonesian.
I am quite fluent in English now.
Did you pick up any Portuguese when you were in Brazil ?
I am reasonable good at languages.
I did French at high school, but it is a bit rusty now.
I know a few words of Hungarian.
My boss can get by in German.
He is bilingual in French and English.
He can have a conversation in Polish.
I cannot speak a word of Italian.


A progress report
A written report saying whether a student is improving or not.

Fee

Essay
A short piece of writing on a particular subject.

A graduate
Somebody who has a first degree from a university or college.

A talk on a subject, especially at university or college.

A student loan
The money that are students borrow from a bank while at university.

An undergraduate
Somebody who is studying for their first degree at university or college.

A post graduate
Somebody who has a first degree and is now studying for a higher degree.

A scholarship
Money paid by a university etc to a student with ability, but not much money.

A seminar
A class in which a small group of students discuss a particular subject.

An assignment
A piece of work given to someone as part of their studies or job.

A lecturer
Somebody who teaches at a university or a college.

A professor
A teacher of the highest level in a university department.

A Master’s
An advanced university degree.

My husband and I decided to learn Chinese a year ago.
We have never been to China, but we want to go there next year.
We were advised to have lessons and we have been studying with a private teacher for three months.
We’re usually given some homework to do every week.
I started mine after I got back from work last night.
I know that my grammar is not very good yet, but while I was reading my course book I recognized a lot of Chinese characters;
So I think my vocabulary is getting better.
My husband often works late, so he cannot study much, but he is having a few days’ holiday at the moment so he can do a bit more.
Our teacher says that we have learned a lot since September.
We were pleased when she told us that.
Before we started having lessons, we had never spoken any Chinese at all.

Hi Paul! Did you go to talk this morning?
Yes, I did, but I didn’t enjoy it very much.

Were you working in the library?
No, I was sleeping. I am exhausted and I do hate getting up early.

There has been a lot to do this week, hasn’t there?
Yes, there has. You know, I was going to try and finish my project this week, but I haven’t do anything yet!

Don’t worry, neither have I.
That makes me feel a bit better. By the way, are you going to George’s party next Saturday?

No, I am not. Actually, I don’t usually like parties much, although I did enjoy that one we went last month.
You mean Brian’s? Yes, so did I. I didn’t get home till 4 a.m.

A lot of people find Brian a bit unfriendly, but I don’t.
No, neither do i. I think he is really nice.

Me too. Anyway, I must go. See you.


Hi Jill. How are you?
Not great, actually.

Oh! Why’s that?
It is my course. I am not enjoying it any more.

How come? you loved it when you started.
I know. I think it is the teacher really.

Why? What’s he like?
He is a bit boring so I don’t listen properly and then I don’t do well in the coursework. I need to sort my live out a bit.

In what way?
I don’t know. Do something different.

Like what exactly?
Join study group and do some exciting things in my free time.

What sort of things?
Acting, for example. I am studying drama, after all! By they way, did I tell you that I am writing a play?

Really? How is it going?
Very slowly. I have had to do a lot of research into 20th century politics.

What for?
My play is about a Canadian politician. In fact I am going to Canada soon.

Who with?
My friend Jo. We are travelling around and visiting a few differences places.

Such as?
Montreal, first of all. There is a film festival there.

That sounds fun. Where else are you going?
Well, we are going hiking in the Rockies.

How long for?
Oh, about a month.

Yes, I do. I write software.

Do you? Didn’t your father work for a software company?

No, he didn’t actually, but my brother does.

I was going to work for the same company, but I didn’t in the end.
