Phrasal Verbs - GE 9 Unit 4




PHRASAL VERBS

Pass on
Tell somebody a piece of information that another person has told you.
Could you pass the message on to your class mates?

Make up
Invent an excuse, explanation, a story
I was late for work so I made up an excuse.

Turn out to = menjadi kejutan
Happened in the particular way,
Have a particular result which is often unexpected
I wasn’t looking forward to the evening, but it turn out to be a lot of fun.

Run over
Hit somebody/something while you are driving and knock them to the ground.
I accidentally ran over a cat last night.

Go off = explodes
The bomb went off at exactly 6:37 p.m.

Run away = melarikan diri
Leave a place quickly because of frightened or dnt want to get caught.
The thief took my bag and run away.

Work out = berpikir keras untuk memahami
Understand or find the answer to something by thinking about it
It took me ages to work out in the answer to question three.
Get away with
Avoid punishment for something.
He traveled on a false passport and got away with it.

Knock out
Hit somebody hard, so that they /he become unconscious
The mugger hit the man so hard that he knocked him out.

Come round
Become conscious again after being knocked out when he came round, he couldn’t remember anything.


Example:


I  didn’t really want to go to the wedding, but it turned out to be a lot of fun.

I always get really nervous when the plane is about to take off.

I was really scared so I run away as fast as I could.

Don’t worry, this isn’t a true story. I am just making it up.

Could you pass this massage on to the rest of your classmates.

When you drive around the farm, be careful that you don’t run over any chickens.

I couldn’t work out why everyone was looking at me.


I used to be quite good at boxing, but one day somebody knocked me out and I didn’t come round for about 10 minutes.


We have just heard that a bomb has gone off near the airport.
