Have done & get done
1. Have done
When we
pay somebody else to do a job.
We usually have the decorating done professionaly.
I still get my car service at the local garage.
Get something done is more
informal.
Passive: S + have/get + something + past participle
In any verb form
- Now I am having the kitchen painted.
- I have had lots of things done recently.
- There was a leak in the bathroom, so I got that fixed.
- I would never had my washing machine serviced
before.
- I will get the glass replaced sometime this
week.
Negatives and questions
By using the correct form
Rick doesn’t have his car serviced regularly.
Does Rick have his car serviced regularly?
Jason didn’t have this bathroom painted last week.
Did Jason have this bathroom painted last
week?
Chris is not getting her boiler replaced.
Is Chris getting her boiler replaced?
2. Get somebody to do something
The negative and question forms
Ask somebody that we know to do the job.
It is a friend or family member, we probably do not
pay them
Ex:
I get my wife to do most things round the house.
The
positive form
S +
get + somebody + infinitive with to + something
Have or get in any verb forms
- I got my Dady to teach me how to do
things.
- I am going to get a friend to come and
help.
The negative and question forms
- I didn’t get anyone to help me.
- Are you going to get somebody to fix it
?
Pay
somebody to do something:
I usually pay somebody to do the garden.
3. Do
something yourself
When we do
the job without any help from other people.
I do most
things round the house myself.
The reflexive
pronouns are:
Myself,
yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves.
Often use
reflexive pronouns to emphasise that we do something instead of somebody else
doing something for us.
- I actually
put some shelves up myself last weekend.
- He is having
his hair cut.
- She is
decorating the kitchen herself.
