Have done & Get done - GE 9 - 10

Have done & get done

1. Have done

When we pay somebody else to do a job.

We usually have the decorating done professionaly.

I still get my car service at the local garage.

Get something done is more informal.

Passive: S + have/get + something + past participle

In any verb form

- Now I am having the kitchen painted.

- I have had lots of things done recently.

- There was a leak in the bathroom, so I got that fixed.

- I would never had my washing machine serviced before.

- I will get the glass replaced sometime this week.

Negatives and questions

By using the correct form

Does Rick have his car serviced regularly?

Jason didn’t have this bathroom painted last week.

Chris is not getting her boiler replaced.

2. Get somebody to do something

Ask somebody that we know to do the job.

It is a friend or family member, we probably do not pay them
Ex:
I get my wife to do most things round the house.

The positive form
S + get + somebody + infinitive with to + something

Have or get in any verb forms

- I got my Dady to teach me how to do things.

- I am going to get a friend to come and help.

The negative and question forms

- I didn’t get anyone to help me.

- Are you going to get somebody to fix it ?

Pay somebody to do something:
I usually pay somebody to do the garden.

3. Do something yourself

When we do the job without any help from other people.
I do most things round the house myself.

The reflexive pronouns are:
Myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves.

Often use reflexive pronouns to emphasise that we do something instead of somebody else doing something for us.

- I actually put some shelves up myself last weekend.

- He is having his hair cut.

- She is decorating the kitchen herself.
