Communication Vocabulary – BE 4 - Unit 1



If you are hesitant when you speak, you speak slowly and pause often because you are nervous or embarrassed.

If your speech or writing is fluent, you speak or write easily and clearly with no hesitation or mistakes.

Someone who is extrovert is very lively and sociable.

If what you say or write is coherent, it makes sense because it is sensible and well structured.

If you are persuasive, other people believe what you say or do what you want them to do.

If you are inhibited, you are embarrassed or not confident enough to do something.

Someone who is concise does not use more words than necessary.

If you ramble in your speech or writing, you keep going off the subject in a confused way.

Concise = succinct (ringkas)

Hesitant = reluctant to speak

Rambling = talking in confused way  (ngoceh)

Articulate = able to expressed idea well

Coherent = clear and easy to understand

Persuasive = good at influencing people

Extrovert = outgoing

Responsive = eager to react and communicate

Eloquent (fasih)

Digress = (ngelantur)

Fluent

Focused

Inhibited (terbata-bata)

Reserved (tenang)

Sensitive

Vague (samar-samar)



Factors that make a good communicator

Fluency in the language

Grammatically accuracy

An awareness of body language

An extensive vocabulary

Being a good listener

Not being afraid of making mistakes

A sense of humor

Physical appearance

No strong accent

He is a very articulate speaker. He express his ideas clearly and effectively.

The product presentation was rambling. It included a lot of useless information and no one really understood the point.
Your talk is limited to 10 minutes; so you need to be succinct. If you don’t stick to the point you will not have time to say everything.
Bill is extrovert, so he really enjoys giving presentations. He loves being the centre of attention and talking to people.
I am afraid I still don’t know anything about the launch. The marketing manager gave a presentation about it, but he wasn’t very coherent. I don’t think he was prepared.
I have asked her to attend the meeting. She is very persuasive, and I think she can get a good deal for us.
I really enjoy listening to his negotiate. He eloquent and knows the business very well, so he speaks with great authority.
To be a fluent speaker, you need to practice speaking so that your words flow naturally.

Speakers can engage the audience by telling interesting personal stories and by making eye contact.
You have to concentrate and listen to the question the audience asks.
