Present Perfect : Simple - Continuous - Short & Longer Actions

Present Perfect Simple : state, achievement, number, repetitive
Present Perfect Continuous : duration

Present Perfect Continuous = activity

The company has been publishing guidebooks for 32 years.


Activity :  learn, rain, try, play, work, read, wait.

I’ve been learning English for 3 years

The company has been running a website for several years.

I have been doing my homework.

Present Perfect Simple = state

They have been married since 2014.


Short action: start, find, lose, break, buy, stop

Ex.:
I have started a course.

The company has published over 650 guidebooks since the company began.

Both : live & work

I have lived here for 5 years.

I have been living here for 5 years.

I have worked in Jakarta since 1994.

I have been working in Jakarta since 1994.

I have done my homework  (finished).

I have been doing my homework.

Present Perfect Continuous - longer actions
Often for longer actions: learn, rain, wait, try, play, work, read.
I have been learning English for about 3 years.

Don’t usually for short actions: start, find, lose, break, buy, stop.
I have started a course.

Both are possible
I have lived (been living) here for 5 years.

He has worked (been working) in Jakarta since 1993.

I have been working here for 17 years.

How long have you been traveling on your own.

He has wrote books since he left university.

He has written 3 books so far.

They haven’t been playing tennis for very long.

I have known my best friend since we were kids.

How long has your sister been an actress.

We haven’t had a holiday for three years.

How long have you owned your house.
