What makes people work harder?

It seems that those of us who believe that a pay increase is always the most important motivating factor have got it wrong.

Indeed, numerous job satisfaction surveys carried out in the last two decades indicate that attractive remuneration package is often secondary to other factors.

For example, it seems that a substantial number of people put a good work/life balance at the top of their priorities.

In addition, most people also want to be given more autonomy and better promotion opportunities.

As regards what demotivates people, the threat of redundancy is mentioned very often, together with unsatisfactory relationships with one’s boss and poor working conditions.
