Modals - Definition


Modals adalah jenis auxiliary verb yang digunakan untuk mengekpresikan: kemampuan, kemungkinan, izin, larangan dan keharusan.

Modals Auxiliary Verb adalah kata yang ditempatkan sebelum main verb (kata kerja utama) untuk memodifikasi makna dari kata kerja tersebut. Semua auxiliary verbs kecuali be, do dan have disebut modals

Modals dalam berfungsi untuk mengekspresikan:
  • willingness (kemauan) atau ability (kemampuan),  
  • necessary (kebutuhan), 
  • dan possibility (kemungkinan) 

Fungsi modals adalah sebagai kata kerja bantu dan tidak dapat berdiri sendiri. Kata kerja bantu ini antara lain : can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must dan ought to semuanya terbilang ke dalam phrase modal verb.

Example:


You can see a lot of famous people.
You can spend a day at the beach.
You can take a ferry to an island.
You can sit at outdoor cafes at night.
You can see a different movies every night.
You can go to a show or concert every weekend.
You can make Korean food.
